Students in kindergarten through 8th grade generally receive access to:
- Classes at their assigned grade level
- Classes one grade level below
- Classes one grade level above
For example, a 7th-grade student can access 6th-, 7th-, and 8th-grade classes.
Kindergarten students can access kindergarten and 1st-grade classes because there is no grade level below kindergarten.
When Is a Lower-Grade Class Helpful?
A lower-level class can be useful when a student:
- Needs more practice with a particular skill
- Has a gap in a subject from a previous school year
- Wants to review earlier material before moving forward
- Is working at different grade levels in different subjects
- Would benefit from rebuilding confidence with familiar concepts
For example, a student may be ready for grade-level science and language arts while reviewing math from the previous grade. This subject-by-subject flexibility is one of the ways Homeschool Pro helps families adapt their homeschool curriculum to the student instead of forcing every subject into the same pace.
Access to a lower-grade class does not mean the student must complete every lesson in it. Families can use an entire course or focus only on the lessons and topics that need review.
Students in grades 9 through 12 receive access to all available high school classes.
This means a high school student can choose courses commonly taken in earlier high school grades when they need to review material, complete a missing course, or follow a different sequence of homeschool classes.
When choosing high school courses, consider the student’s previous coursework, academic readiness, graduation requirements, and any recommended prerequisites. Families can also contact their Homeschool Advisor for help planning an appropriate high school course schedule.

Needing a lower-grade class in one subject does not mean a student should be moved back in every subject.

Her older son is advanced in math and takes higher-level math classes, but reading and writing take him longer. A student may use a lower-grade class to strengthen foundational skills without changing their official grade level or being moved backward in subjects where they are doing well.
For example, a student could:
- Take above-grade-level math because they are ready for more challenge
- Use a lower-grade language arts class to strengthen reading or writing skills
- Continue grade-level science and social studies
- Return to the assigned-grade class after reviewing a missing skill
- Work at different levels in different subjects for as long as needed
This can be especially helpful for students with uneven academic development. A gifted or advanced student may be several grade levels ahead in one subject while still needing review in another. That is normal and does not mean anything is wrong with the student.
The mom in the video explains that her children are not stuck in one academic box. They can be ahead in one area, still growing in another, and continue progressing without feeling embarrassed, held back, or labeled.
Lower-grade access is not about assigning a negative label. It gives the student a chance to fill a learning gap, build confidence, and develop the foundation needed for more advanced work.
Can I Request Different Class Access?
Yes. Parents may email their advisor to request a grade level be added to or removed from a student’s account.
You may want to request a change if:
- Your student needs a class outside the levels currently available
- A particular course would provide helpful review
- You want to remove unused classes and simplify the Student Dashboard
