Why are completed lessons or quizzes showing as incomplete?

When a class or chapter suddenly shows incomplete lessons or quizzes, it is almost always because the instructor added new material to the course. Those new items appear as incomplete because your student has not completed them yet, while their earlier progress remains intact.

Homeschool Pro instructors regularly update classes with new lessons, quizzes, Study Guides, worksheets, activities, and other learning materials. When new material is added, it appears as incomplete because your student has not completed that new item yet.

Previously completed lessons and quizzes should remain complete.

Why Did This Appear in a Chapter My Student Already Finished?

When instructors create new material, they place it in the chapter where it fits best academically.

For example, a new quiz about fractions may be added to the fractions chapter rather than placed at the end of the course. Your student may have completed everything that was previously available in that chapter, but the newly added quiz will now appear as incomplete.

This can make it look as though part of the student’s progress disappeared, but the incomplete item is usually something that was not in the course when the student originally completed the chapter.

Why Is a Completed Class Showing as In Progress Again?

If your student completed an entire class and an instructor later adds new material, the class may change from Completed back to In Progress.

The course completion percentage may also decrease because the class now contains more total items than it did before.

This does not mean the student’s previous work was erased. It simply means there are new lessons or activities in the class that have not yet been completed.

How Can We Check What Is Incomplete?

  1. Open the affected class.
  2. Review the lesson and chapter list in the course sidebar.
  3. Look for lessons, quizzes, or activities that are not marked complete.
  4. Open those items to review the newly available material.

New content may appear within a chapter the student previously completed rather than only at the end of the course.

Does My Student Have to Complete the New Material?

If your student is currently working through the class, we recommend completing the new lessons and quizzes. The instructor added them to provide additional instruction, practice, or review.

If your student completed the class during a previous school year, they do not have to return and complete the newly added material. However, they are welcome to review it, and doing so is recommended when practical because the new content may provide useful additional learning.

What If a Previously Completed Item Is Now Incomplete?

If a specific lesson or quiz that your student definitely completed before is now showing as incomplete, please contact us so we can investigate.

Include:

  • The student’s full name
  • The student’s @remotelearning.school email address
  • The class name
  • The exact lesson or quiz title
  • A screenshot showing the incomplete item, if possible

This will help us determine whether the item is newly added or whether there is another issue with the student’s course progress.

The Bottom Line

When a completed chapter or class suddenly contains incomplete items, the student usually has not lost any progress.

The most common reason is that an instructor added new curriculum materials and placed them in the chapter where they belong. Previously completed work remains complete, while the new lessons or quizzes appear as incomplete because the student has not seen them before.
