Homeschooling is legally recognized throughout the United States, although the requirements for operating a homeschool, maintaining records, and completing high school vary by state. The U.S. Department of Education maintains state-by-state information about the laws and regulations that apply to home education.
What Will My Student Receive When They Graduate?
A graduating Homeschool Pro student receives:
- A high school diploma documenting completion of their homeschool education
- An official high school transcript showing completed courses, grades, credits, and GPA
- Support with graduation planning and college application records
The diploma confirms that the student completed high school. The transcript provides the detailed academic record that colleges, trade schools, employers, scholarship programs, and other organizations may request.
Important: Students who complete their high school education through Homeschool Pro and meet the graduation requirements applicable under their state’s homeschool laws receive a high school diploma and do not need to take the GED.
How Does the Homeschool Advisor Help With Graduation?
Homeschool Pro includes access to a dedicated Homeschool Advisor who can help your family understand what your student needs to complete before graduating.
Your advisor can help with:
- Reviewing the graduation requirements applicable under your state’s homeschool laws
- Planning the student’s high school courses and credits
- Determining which credits have already been completed
- Identifying any remaining graduation requirements
- Documenting Homeschool Pro coursework
- Adding eligible coursework completed through a previous school or another curriculum
- Preparing the student’s official transcript
- Preparing the student’s high school diploma
- Organizing records for college and scholarship applications
Homeschool Pro includes advisor assistance with state requirements, transcripts, graduation planning, and diploma preparation.
When Should We Begin Planning for Graduation?
We recommend contacting your Homeschool Advisor when your student begins high school rather than waiting until the end of 12th grade.
Beginning early gives your advisor time to help your family:
- Review the student’s previous coursework.
- Create an appropriate high school credit plan.
- Make sure important subjects are included.
- Keep the transcript updated as courses are completed.
- Identify missing credits before the student’s final year.
- Prepare for college, employment, trade school, military service, or another post-graduation path.
If your student is already in 11th or 12th grade, contact the advisor as soon as possible. Your advisor can review the student’s records and help determine what remains to be completed.
Can Coursework From Other Schools or Curricula Be Included?
Yes. The student’s transcript does not have to contain only Homeschool Pro classes.
Your Homeschool Advisor can help document eligible coursework completed through:
- A previous public or private school
- Another online homeschool curriculum
- Printed homeschool materials
- Dual-enrollment or college courses
- Other educational programs
This allows the student to maintain one organized transcript even when their high school education includes several different schools, curricula, or learning sources. Homeschool Pro specifically provides support for adding previous schoolwork and outside homeschool coursework to a complete transcript.
Keep copies of previous transcripts, report cards, course descriptions, grades, and other academic records so your advisor can accurately document the completed work.
Will Colleges Accept the Diploma and Transcript?
Yes. Homeschool students apply to colleges using their high school transcript and proof of high school completion, and Homeschool Pro provides those records.
Colleges evaluate the student’s academic preparation and overall application. Like any applicant, a Homeschool Pro graduate may also be asked to provide:
- An admissions application and essay
- Letters of recommendation
- SAT or ACT scores when required
- Course descriptions
- Information about activities, accomplishments, or responsibilities
- Additional materials requested by the individual college
The Common App lists a high school transcript among the materials first-year applicants should prepare. Stanford’s guidance for homeschooled applicants also requests a transcript and makes clear that students do not need to follow a prescribed or approved homeschool program.
These are normal college admissions requirements. Each college sets its own requirements for all applicants, including students from public schools, private schools, and homeschools.

Will My Student Need to Take the GED?
No. A student who completes high school through Homeschool Pro and meets the applicable graduation requirements receives a high school diploma.
A GED is a high school equivalency credential generally used by someone who did not complete a high school education. It is not part of the Homeschool Pro graduation process and is not required simply because the student was homeschooled.
Homeschool Pro graduates receive a high school diploma, so they do not need to take the GED.
Is the Diploma Different From a Course Certificate?
Yes. A course completion certificate and a high school diploma serve different purposes.
A course certificate recognizes completion of one individual class, such as Biology, Algebra, English, or World History.
A high school diploma is issued after the student completes their overall high school education and meets the graduation requirements applicable under their state’s homeschool laws. The official transcript supports the diploma by listing the student’s courses, grades, credits, and GPA.
Completing one course does not by itself result in a high school diploma.
What Is the Parent’s Role?
Parents should work with their Homeschool Advisor throughout high school and maintain any records required under their state’s homeschool laws.
The parent or legal guardian remains responsible for:
- Following the homeschool requirements that apply in their state
- Making sure the student completes the planned coursework
- Maintaining attendance or work records when required
- Providing accurate information about previous or outside coursework
- Reviewing the student’s transcript before it is finalized
- Submitting any required state or local forms
Your Homeschool Advisor can help explain requirements and prepare forms, records, transcripts, and graduation documents. The parent remains responsible for reviewing, signing, and submitting any documents that must be filed with a school district, state agency, or other authority.
How Do I Contact My Homeschool Advisor?
Your advisor’s name and email address are included in the email containing your student’s Homeschool Pro login information.
When contacting your advisor about graduation, include as much information as possible such as:
- The student’s full name
- Current grade level
- State of residence
- Expected graduation year
- Any previous transcripts or academic records
- The student’s future goals and plans after graduation, when known
